Helmets

Your helmet is your best line of defense against injury, so take the time to track down a good one. Look for a sturdy motorcycle helmet that is designed for extreme sports riding. If ordering online, you can measure your head using a tailor’s tape measure, and check the manufacturer’s size guide to get the correct fit. Otherwise, you can try on helmets and choose one that feels comfortable.

Keep in mind that you will need to replace your helmet after an impact event, no matter how minor. You should also purchase a new helmet every five years, as the protective padding will degrade over time.

Eye Protection

Flying debris is a real hazard on off-road trails. If your helmet does not come with a built-in visor, you will need to invest in a pair of goggles to shield your eyes. Look for goggles that offer UV protection and anti-fogging capabilities.

Gloves

Far from just being fashionable, gloves are essential pieces of riding gear that serve to protect your hands and boost your grip on the steering wheel or handlebars of your vehicle. In cold weather, opt for a pair of insulated gloves to keep your hands toasty. In hot weather, you can choose gloves made with breathable materials to stave off sweat.

Footwear

It is neither safe nor practical to ride an off-road vehicle wearing street shoes. You want a hardy pair of riding boots with plenty of traction. They should ideally cover up your ankles. Get a proper fit, and make sure to tuck in your boot laces before you go riding.

Riding Clothes

Good riding clothes are made with thick or padded material that can protect your skin from abrasions. You can simply wear a padded jacket and pants made with stiff, durable fabric, or you can opt for a one-piece riding suit. Riding suits provide maximum comfort and range of motion, so many advanced riders prefer them.
